The Birmingham Pet Pantry: Families in Oakland County who are dealing with extreme financial strain are often faced with having to surrender their pets to local shelters because they cannot afford to feed them. The animal surrender issue as it relates to financial difficulty not only taxes already overwhelmed shelters with additional need, but adds to the hardship and sense of emotional loss experienced by the family. In 2010, 9-year-old Sophia Rotger created The Birmingham Pet Pantry after learning that families were abandoning their pets because they could no longer afford to feed them. Sophia got to work and 3 months later, she and her sponsor Premier Pet Supply of Beverly Hills delivered over 7,000 pounds of pet food to the Gleaners Food Bank pantry in Pontiac, Michigan. Continuing to help families using Sophia's creative concept, The Birmingham Pet Pantry utilizes existing channels of promotion, collection and distribution. By partnering with Premier Pet Supply to collect pet food donations to contribute to Gleaners, the food bank can distribute the pet food to families who utilize their pantry.
